This mountain range stands strong and mighty along the historic North Canol Highway in northern Yukon. Mount Itsi appears on the skyline as a volcanic form and as you follow North it unfolds into a wide reaching watershed. The MacMillan river rushes through a luscious foregrounds laden with fireweed from the burn that ripped through the valley in earlier years. The artist visited the region for two weeks and collected many great photographs and sketches from various vantage points. The original oil painting measures 48 x 72 inches and is painted on wood and took two years to complete. The career of Yukon born artist, Emma Barr has spanned well over twenty years. The third-generation artist was educated at the Kootenay School of the Arts in Nelson B.C. and graduated with a fine art diploma majoring in mixed media. In addition to her studio work, which focusses primarily on painting commissions, Barr teaches visual art to all ages and experience levels. Barr’s work evolves with her exploration of medium and subject matter. At various points in her career, she has worked with wax and pigment medium, cera-colla, which culminated in a body of abstract work; with oil paints, which emotively explore landscape; in light; sculpture and design for film. Each evolution produces a realized style that documents a vibrant period of intellectual growth. Barr exhibits and sells her work nationally and internationally, and remains as one of Yukon’s favourite and most promising Canadian painters to collect from. She creates about 14 private commissions of Yukon landscapes per year and has two public exhibitions one in the spring and one in the fall. Gallery representation includes; North End Gallery in Whitehorse Yukon and Stephan Fine Arts in Anchorage Alaska. Her hope is that the paintings created evoke a deep emotional reaction to the beauty and grandeur of the natural world.
